Eni Esan Heads Oyo State Parole Board

It is noteworthy to state that on the 25th August, 2022, there was a turning point in the nation’s non-custodial regime with the inauguration of the National Parole Board for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) by the Controller General, Haliru Nababa at Abuja.

The Oyo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service has inaugurated Parole Board members in alignment with the directive of the Controller General of Corrections and the established Correctional Act of 2019.

It is noteworthy to state that on the 25th August, 2022, there was a turning point in the nation’s non-custodial regime with the inauguration of the National Parole Board for the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) by the Controller General, Haliru Nababa at Abuja.

Parole is the temporary release or permanent release of a prisoner before the expiry of a sentence, on the promise of good behavior.

The passage of of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019 allowed for the non-custodial forms of punishment for offenders.

The Oyo State Controller, Mr Ogundipe Sunday during his opening remark at the event on Tuesday, appreciated the Board chairman, Honorable Justice Eni Esan rtd. and her members for honoring the national call to duty.

He said, “this is not just heeding to a call to duty from the Controller General of Corrections but a response to a call by Nigeria itself.”

While appreciating the board members, he encouraged them to also live up to the ‘pace-setter’ slogan that Oyo State is known for.

The Board chairman, Justice Eni Esan (Rtd) in her speech while welcoming the board members, appreciated the CGCS for trusting them to perform the national task, promising the department that the Board members will not disappoint or fall short of their expectations.

The officer-in-Charge (O.C) legal of the Nigerian Police, CSP Funke Fawole while giving a good will message expressed excitement at the new face and functions of the NCoS.

She assured of her readiness to join the moving train of making sure the board is a success.

A brief maiden meeting was held in the Controller’s office immediately after the inauguration and Justice Eni Esan charged all the members to go and brainstorm on ideas needed to handle the tasks ahead of them.

A subsequent meeting date was thereby scheduled to be held in the office of the board chairman on the 17th of January, 2023.

Justice Eni Esan (Rtd), CC Ogundipe Sunday, DCC Ajeleti Bukola (Welfare), ACC Odewunmi Kayode (Non-Custodial), Mr Adeoye Sunday (DPP), CSP Funke Fawole (OC Legal, Police), Mrs Olayinka Olayemi (NDE), Dr Victor Makanjuola, Dr Gboyega Abikoye (NPA) and the Director, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Inclusion).
