……Call For Speedy Completion of Ogbomoso-Oyo Road

Residents of Iseyin, in Iseyin local government of Oyo State have called on the federal government to summon the contractor handling the Ogbomoso-Oyo road and do everything possible to complete the project in good time.

This is as a result of diversion of heavy duty trucks from Lagos, Ibadan and other South-West States, heading to the Northern Nigeria towards Iseyin-Oyo and Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso roads because of almost two weeks traffic gridlock along Oyo-Ogbomoso road.

The Oyo State government, under Governor Seyi Makinde took over the reconstruction of Iseyin-Oyo road and also constructed the new Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso road, to ease the movement of people and goods from Oke-Ogun region of the State to the north.

While speaking with The Chronicler Newspaper on Wednesday, a medical practitioner attached to the General Hospital, Iseyin, Dr. Oluwole Odelola said the surge in the number of heavy duty trailers, ferrying cements, construction materials and other products towards the north that pass across Iseyin from Oyo now, is high.

He said the movement of these trailers on the new roads might cause them to disintegrate and collapse early, if the State government fails to find a lasting solution to the problem.

Oluwole added that the State government should stop the trailers from taking these routes by erecting high iron barricades that will prevent trailers and other trucks from passing the roads.

“These roads have been the answers to the prayers of indigenes of Oke-Ogun and we that come here to work, we know how many years the Ibadan-Iseyin road and Oyo-Iseyin road were left without repair or reconstruction, now that the government in power today has deemed it fit to do the needful, we should not keep looking while these trailers destroy the roads.

“Strong iron barricades should be erected to prevent these trailers from passing while the federal government should see this as a clarion call for it to summon the contractor handling the Oyo-Ogbomoso road and settle on the reasons why the road has become an abandoned project.”

In his words, the Vice President, Ebedi Frontliners, Iseyin, Comrade Abiodun Bambi, said it is imperative to look for ways to sustain the functionality of the road if the horde of heavy duty trucks cannot be stopped from plying the Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso road, adding that the road should be tolled.

Bambi maintained that proceeds from the tolls can be directed to maintenance of the roads, so as to prevent their disintegration and collapse.

“I wish the State can see this as a means of generating I.G.R, the money from the tolls will be channel towards maintaning these roads so that they may last and government will be able to direct State funds to other meaningful social infrastructures,” he said.
